Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Booting trouble
I recently re-installed Windows XP SP2 edition. But the system does not boot if any DVD or CD is present in my DVD-RW drive. This is not a system CD of any sort. I checked my bios and disabled the DVD-RW drive as a boot priority but the problem persists. Please suggest a solution. Nischit Ranganath
Please take the following steps to tackle this problem: First, check whether you are able to boot the system from any bootable CD, say Windows XP set-up CD. If the system fails to boot with the boot CD, check the DVD-RW drive and make sure the jumper settings are properly set. Change the boot priority option in the BIOS setting i.e., make the Hard Disk Drive the first Boot device and DVD drive the Second Boot device. Check the DVD drive IDE cable, which is connected to the mother board. You can try changing (swapping) the IDE cable. If you connected the DVD drive as secondary Master, try to connect the DVD drive as Primary Slave of the Hard Disk Drive. If the system boots via boot CD, then do the following. Boot your Windows XP operating system without a CD inside and check whether the DVD drive is identified with no conflict in Windows Device Manager. To do this, please click start button - Run - type devmgmt.msc. This will bring up the device manager window. Expand (+) the DVD/CD-ROM Drives and check your DVD drive. If the device has a conflict, it will be indicated with a yellow "!" mark or red "X ". Right-click the DVD drive in conflict and click uninstall and restart the machine or right-click and select "Scan for Hardware changes". If it prompts for drivers, provide the details of the exact drivers of your DVD drive. Next, please check your DVD drive manufacturer's Web site for software updates and firmware updates. Since you re-installed Windows, please reinstall the DVD player software and check. Some DVD burning software (such as Nero) also include `Test Drive' facility.
