Learning to play the fun way - P.V. SIVAKUMAR

If you listen to a lot of instrumental music, it is quite likely that you listen quite a bit to the flute or the sax if a connoisseur of Indian classical, or the flute and the horns (Tuba, trumpet, trombone, and sax) if a connoisseur of Western classical or Jazz.

If you are cosmopolitan in your approach, you might listen to all of them, maybe in the same concert!

Why this sudden focus on those instruments? Well, the point is that Miles Davis' mastery, Pt. Chaurasia's brilliance, Louis Armstrong's playfulness, and Shashank's energy, come from not only their knowledge of music but also the control they have over their breathing.

Could there be a way to make these breathing exercises, practice sessions and breathing control more fun for the student and less traumatic for those listening (willy-nilly) to the practice?

This is where Matthew Irvine Brown's Breath Control Car (http://www.irvinebrown.com/breathcar.html) comes in.

This is a toy remote-controlled car that has been hacked to respond to directions from a mouthpiece instead of the normal joystick.

The objective initially could be to create set patterns, such as an 8 or a three-point turn; later the objective could be to keep the car on track, the track describing a music score.

If you find this approach to music teaching and learning interesting, you might want to check out his Rehearsal Joypads (http://www.irvinebrown.com/controllers.html) concept as well.

Wish they could teach playing cricket like this?
