Upgrading RAM

I am using Windows XP SP-2 on my system. My PC configuration includes AMD Duron 750 Mhz, 40 GB HDD, MSI K7T Pro2A motherboard and 128 MB SDRAM. The performance is a bit on the slower side. I've cleared all unnecessary startup programs, defragmented HDD, but still I find it unsatisfactory. Would upgrading system memory help? My motherboard has three 168-pin DIMM sockets. It supports 8 MB to 512 MB DIMM Memory module. It is a double-notched socket. What are the memory upgrade options available to me? Also, are SDRAMs easily available and will they be cost-effective, since it is the era of DDR and DDR2?

You have specified that the motherboard model is MSI K7T Pro2A. This supports three 168-pin DIMM Sockets and memory up to 1.5GB of memory PC100/133. So it is recommended to add another 512 MB of SDRAM with any one of the following memory options.

1) 168pin PC133 with one 512 MB SDRAM

2) 168pin PC133 with two 256 MB SDRAM

3) 168pin PC100 with one 512 MB SDRAM

4) 168pin PC100 with two 256 MB SDRAM.

If the same speed of SDRAM is not available in the market, then you may mix both PC-100 and PC-133 SDRAM but it would be no advantage gained, as the 133MHz memory will only run at the bus speed of 100MHz, meaning the SDRAM bus speed will run to the lowest bus speed of your installed RAM. It is advisable to install at least 256 MB SDRAM (recommended 512 MB RAM). Also, please refer to your motherboard manual for more specifics.
