Enabling CD, DVD autoplay

I am facing a problem of misconfiguration with the DVD-ROM on my system. Earlier, when a CD was inserted into it or in the CD-RW, it would open automatically and thereafter the programme in it worked on clicking upon it. Now when the CD is placed, the mouse arrow shows only some movement in the Desktop. After I wait for some time, the My Computer icon in the Desktop is clicked, the DVD Drive or CD-RW Drive again clicked and only then can I play the CD. I want to restore the procedure to the original configuration for playing CDs. I did some reconfiguration in the properties, by right-clicking the DVD and CD-RW drives. But this has not helped. Please suggest a solution.

In Windows XP, the Drive Properties is opened by right-clicking the Drive letter in `My Computer.' Here, there is a Tab Auto Play next to the General Tab. In the tab there are options for opening CDs and for viewing the folder contents. Or playing the selected type of files.

If the Auto Play tab is opened, you have options for each type of files, such as Music files, Pictures, Video files, Mixed Content, Music CD, DVD Movie and Blank CD too. The actions to be performed for each type of files vary. For Music files, the actions available for selection are Play using Windows Media Player, Open Folder to view Files and Take No Action. If other media players are also installed, there is a listing for each application in addition to the above. We can select each type of file to be handled in the defined way or the operating system (OS) to prompt each time when a new CD/DVD is inserted in the drive. For example, we can configure the system to play video files using the windows media player when a VCD is inserted in the CD-ROM drive.

With regard to the scenario you have described in your query, the setting might have changed to `take no action'. You could try changing to the appropriate action to be taken when opening each type of file.
