Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Disk partitioning
My PC has one disk drive (C:), with no partition. How can I partition it into two more disks (say D: & E:) without formatting and losing the data currently stored in my system? Sanjit
Utilities are available to split a disk partition with data. One such utility is Partition Magic. This can be used to split one single drive into multiple drives. The free space in the drive has to be greater than the size of the new partition being created. For instance, let us assume that there is a hard disk of size 40 GB. There is only one partition created using the entire hard disk. The used space is about 12 GB. We can split the existing C: into the following more drives 1. C: 20 GB and another 20 GB D: 2. C: 30 GB and another 10 GB D: But not C: 10 GB and the D: 30 GB. The size of the partitions has to be decided according to the free space available or the data has to be moved to a safe location to make the free space. If we are resizing the partition other than the boot partition C:, it can be done without rebooting the computer. If it is a boot partition, it will prompt booting the computer for the changes to take effect. It is good practice to run disk utilities such as Scan Disk or Check Disk before resizing the Partition. The Disk utilities will check for any bad sectors and fix them. Partition resizing with bad sectors will not provide the necessary result. It is always recommended to back-up the data before doing any major disk activity. Please ensure that the partition resizing is running uninterrupted. If it is interrupted, it may lead to disk failure.
