Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off 'Duplicate IP' problem
I surf the Internet through my laptop. However, the other day, the system suddenly displayed a message that said, ‘duplicate IP’ and closed the Net connection. Ever since, I have not been able to access the Internet. Why has this happened? Please suggest a solution.
Biplob Karmakar In a Local Area Network (LAN) environment, each computer is allotted a unique IP address. If the same IP address is assigned to another computer, and both are communicating in the network, the message ‘duplicate IP’ gets displayed. One of the two conflicting computers will not participate in the network. If the conflict is resolved by allotting a different IP address to one of the computers, then both can communicate in the network. The IP address for each computer in a LAN can be allotted either manually or by a DHCP server. The Internet access can be considered for two scenarios. The first thing is for a broadband Internet connection (SOHO) wherein there is the IP address given by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). In this type you have to contact the ISP for the Internet access problem. The other scenario is accessing the Internet through a Large office Network where the Internet connection can be an ISDN connection or a Leased Line connection. There is a range of IP addresses allotted for Internet access. Net access from LAN computers is routed through an Internet firewall or proxy server. The firewall/proxy server handles the network traffic from the Local LAN. The configuration in the firewall/proxy server is either IP address-based or username and password authenticated. For IP address-based configuration, there is a range of addresses or selected IP addresses permitted for Internet access. For username-based authentication, a username and a password is provided to the user. Only with the valid username and password is it possible to access the Net. In your case, if it is the first mentioned scenario, you need to approach your ISP. If it is the second case, you will need to contact your network administrator to have the correct IP address (Internet-enabled IP) allotted for your computer. If the Internet access is based on the username and password authentication, please contact the system administrators for the correct username and password. Also, please do remember that sometimes Net access is denied because the password might have expired.
