Trouble opening folder

I have Windows XP sp2 as my operating system. Other system specifications include Intel MB 965, Intel core2duo 6320, I GB RAM and 7900GS video card. Of late, if I double-click any folder in any partition or CD, the folder opens blank. If I right-click and select open, then the folder opens showing the files. If I right-click the context menu, the list starts with Search instead of Open as the first in the list. I do not want to use system restore as I have added a lot of software after I noticed this problem.

This problem occurs when the registry entry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell gets corrupted. The following steps can be tried to fix it. The first option is to do a DllInstall of shell32.dll. This can be done by clicking start - Run and typing the following command "regsrv32 /i shell32.dll" (without quotes). After this, please reboot the computer and check whether the problem has been fixed.

The second option is to try changing the values in the registry of Windows XP. To do this, click start - run and type "Regedt32.exe". This opens the registry editor. Locate and then click the Default valueunder the following keys in the registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell Click Modify on the Edit menu and type none in the Value data box, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor.

If your problem still persists, you can follow the steps mentioned in the following link:http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/ Tip.aspx?id=10667

In this procedure, there is a batch file to backup the registry entries under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell and create all the entries under it.
