Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off All about hard disks
How many hard disks can we connect to a single computer, be it Pentium 4, old Pentium, Celeron system or latest ones? SANDEEP SINGH Nowadays, in almost all the personal computer motherboards, you may notice two IDE connectors. It is a 40-pin connector also called ATA or PATA(Parallel ATA). Each connector supports two IDE devices that are connected using a IDE ribbon cable. So, totally, a motherboard can support four IDE devices. The IDE devices may be a hard disk or a CD-ROM drive or a DVD drive. If your system already contains a CD-ROM drive then you may connect three IDE hard disks in your system. You have to set these IDE devices as a master, slave or cable select using jumpers. The jumper specification will be available on the device itself. The new motherboards come with SATA (Serial ATA) connectors (controllers), which support SATA hard disks. Two or four SATA connectors are available, depending on the motherboard. Each connector supports only one SATA hard disk using a serial (red) cable, hence for SATA hard disks you don't need to set jumpers and master slave combinations. It is available in higher capacity, easy for installation and is the future technology as compared with IDE hard disks. Apart from internal IDE and SATA hard disks, nowadays, external hard disks are available. You can connect these external hard disks through the USB port of your computer.
