Internet Columns - Come Again! Novel note
Making waves.
If you always thought the triangle was the weirdest-looking instrument you have seen in the hands of the musician, like I did till recently, then here’s a new one for you, a music instrument called hipDisk. Well, we could possibly argue that the tuba looked weirder, but the hipDisk beats that one too. Created by Danielle Wilde (details at http://www.audiomulch.com/~danielle/), the hipDisk is made up of disks, each of which contains 12 switches, any two of which have to meet to create a note. The performer wears the two disks — one on the torso and one on the hip, and moves/gyrates/dances to create the music. The instrument, as it is today, is designed for women, but Danielle Wilde grants that a version may also be developed for men. Do visit the Web site for more details and pictures. And here’s a follow-up on an earlier instalment of ‘Come Again’ (Tune in to the buzz, http://www.blonnet.com/ew/2007/06/25/stories/2007062550030100.htm). Bill Shackelford (at http://billshackelford.com/home/portfolio_blogged) has designed a physical balloon that grows bigger whenever someone visits his page from a specific list. Of course he still can’t do two balloons, one for positive reviews and the other for negative! N. Nagaraj
