Telecommunications Columns - Tip Off Net access through mobile phone
How can one access the Internet through the mobile phone? Please explain. Munikrishna There are two ways to do this: You can use the mobile phone to connect your computer directly to the Internet, provided by your cellular service provider, such as GPRS. You can also connect your computer or laptop using the mobile phone as a modem for a dial-up connection to a private network. The connectivity between the mobile phone and the laptop or computer can be done using Data cable, Infrared (IR) or Blue Tooth. Internet through GPRS For Internet browsing in laptop or computer using mobile GPRS connection, you will need to install a driver for that particular mobile handset in your computer. To configure a new connection using GPRS, please open “Network Connections” from Control Panel. In Network Connection, run “new connection wizard”, Click next. Select “connect to the internet”. “Set up my connection manually”. Next select “Connect using dial-up modem”, Select the model of your mobile phone, type a name for this connection, Enter the phone number as *99#. Leave the user name and password blank. Click next and complete the wizard. Now, under the “Dial-up Network connection” your mobile phone connection will be displayed. Please right-click it and select connect. The dial-up connection window will be displayed. Here, just click Dial and it will connect to the cell-phone subscriber. Once the connection is established, you can browse the Internet from your computer or laptop through the mobile phone. It will use the GPRS facility of your mobile service provider. In GPRS connection, whenever the browser (IE) is brought up, it will not prompt for dialling the other end number. It will directly connect to the Internet. In GPRS, the connectivity is a Digital Data Service. When you use the GPRS facility, the charges will be credited to your mobile number. Dial-up to Private Network You can use your mobile phone as a modem to connect to a private network. For this, you need a valid username and password to that network. Please check with your mobile phone service provider to see whether this option is available on his network. Some mobile service providers may block or disallow such connections. In such instances, if you try to connect to a dial-up to a private network via your cell-phone from your computer, you may fail to establish connection. First, install all the drivers for the mobile phone in your computer. In particular, you will need to install that particular phone modem driver. Then you will have to disable other modems if installed in the computer for using the mobile phone as a modem. To make a new Dial-up connection, please open control panel and Select “Network Connections”. In Network Connection, run “new connection wizard”, Click next. Select “Connect to the internet”. Select “Set up my connection manually”. “Connect using dial up modem”. Select the model of your mobile. type name, enter the phone number to be connected, provide a valid user name and password. click next. Now a new connection will be displayed in the Dial-up Network connection. Right click and select connect, and the dial-up connection window will appear. Please verify the username, password and dial-up number and click dial. It will connect to the private network. Once connected, you can either upload or download files. The administrator of the private network should allow uploading or downloading of files in the dial-up connection. In dial-up connection, the charge is only for the mobile connectivity.
