Just relax

T. Singaravelou

Put your feet up.

After the previous instalment in this space turned out as a rant on the worst e-mailing habit of otherwise intelligent people, I got a lot of talk from people who were very concerned with my well-being: take some time off to smell the roses, see the sunrise and sunset, just lie down in a lush lawn that feels like a deep and soft carpet; basically, just let off. And when your precious one feels this way, you just have to give in.

But wait, there’s a job to attend to. Taking time off is not a luxury, just a step to certain future madness. What do I do?

I turn to our common friend, philosopher and guide and find a few interesting things that can keep things light and restore some sense of perspective and keep me balanced.

One person who must have felt just like me one day went to work on an analysis of the usage of colour in the posters of some of the top grossing movies of our time. If you were fascinated by E.T, energised by Beverly Hills Cop, convulsed with laughter by Monsters Inc and Shrek 2, and suddenly couldn’t swallow when you were watching The Lion King or Saving Private Ryan, then you should just take a look at this list. The post is titled ‘Dark and Fleshy: The color of top grossing movies’ and is available at http://www.underconsideration.com/speakup/archives/003641.html

To relax completely, and I mean this in a very good way, and not simply going to sleep, take a look at http://www.chillmasterflex.com/, which provides an animated sequence accompanied by some mellow music. The animated sequence loops without it being very evident, and the music. You get the option of a seaside, a lakeside and a fireside view.

As for the option of just lying down on a lawn and looking up on a starry night, someone tried it inside the city and saw enough patterns that led to: http://www.slanted.de/node/1361, which is a set of photos, each shot in such a way that the sky, framed by buildings, forms a letter of the alphabet. Lots of investigation and experimentation leading to a very satisfying yet otherwise practically useless result.

My boss, an understanding and reasonable man at all times, and more so when it comes to our well-being, who was so concerned that he asks me if I want a holiday, is sure to have my Internet connection disabled after this!
