Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Browsing trouble
Surfing hitch. My home computer has 80 GB hard disk and 512 MB RAM, with a Tata Indicom Internet connection. The problem I am now facing is that, every time I open Gmail, this message is displayed: “The page contains secure and non-secure items. Do you want to display non-secure items?” I say ‘No’ and go on to check my mails. But after some time, this error message crops up: “The page has been corrupted. If you are running security or firewall software, you may have to disable it. Learn more” or “Internet Explorer cannot open this site. Operation aborted.” When I open other Web sites, the system says, “The page has expired.... Operation Aborted.” This is happening only with my home computer. Please suggest a solution. N. Gurumurthy Gmail is a secure site. When you open it, it will display this message, “The page contains Secure and Non-Secure items. Do you want to display non-secure items?” It merely gives you information about the content in that site, which could be both secure and non-secure. When you open a gmail site, it downloads the non-secure content from that site. It uses a security protocol, which could be Secure Sockets Layer or PCT (Private Communications Technology), to secure the information that you send and receive through that site. When sites use a security protocol, information that you provide, such as your name or credit-card number, is encrypted so that other people can’t read it. Normally, all sites that require username and password for authentication use secure protocol, for example, online stores, banking sites, etc. However, some Web pages that use secure protocol also contain items that do not use this secure protocol. You must decide whether to continue working with this site. If you do not feel comfortable about working with it, click No. Some sites will allow you entry and some will close up. Instead of saying No, you could say yes. The site will then just display the non-secure items that don’t use secure protocol. If you have installed genuine software in your computer and have anti-virus software, then non-secure content won’t harm your system. As regards the ‘Internet Explorer cannot open this site. Operation aborted’ error message, please check your Tata Indicom Internet connection settings, whether they are blocking any specific protocol. If you are using firewall software, just turn off the firewall and check that Web site again. Now, if you are able to browse that site, then you will need to add that protocol to the firewall exception list and then switch on the firewall. But if, even after switching off the firewall, you are not able to browse the site, please check whether the site is available for browsing. It could also be that the site is slow to open due to high usage. Also, please check whether you have installed all the updates in your computer. If there is any bug in Internet Explorer, it will be rectified in the updates. If, after installing the updates, you still face the same problem, you can, perhaps, use third party browser software. You can try FireFox Mozilla software which is equivalent to Internet Explorer. It is free downloadable software.
