Bullish bear

This site for children says it can make a difference.

Paromita Pain

Resources for autistic children that are free and let you connect with other parents, doctors and specialists. That’s what www.jambav.com, backed by Adventnet, the software company, offers. The site features an array of games, tools and activities that cater to the different needs of children, parents and teachers.

The team that develops the portal calls itself Jambav, after the Bear King Jambhavaan, in Ramayana — the wise one who convinced Hanuman he could fly to Lanka and back. At Jambav, the team believes that there is hidden potential waiting to be encouraged in every child — with special needs or otherwise. “Our mission is to enable and empower children, parents, and special educators to do so,” says Rajendran Danapani, head of team Jambav.

Take the Super Kid concept, for instance. This is a developmental milestones tracker to track your child’s development from birth to six years. You can also share and connect with other parents who have children in the same stage as yours.

Predominantly Adobe Flash has been used for the games. The backend server-side logic is written in PHP, a popular language for Web sites. “Every game that’s built at Jambav goes through a serious and prolonged brainstorming session, sometimes even involving external experts (parents and special educators). This is because, in a world already filled with similar games, we want to stand out, keep it simple, powerful, useful, and entertaining, at the same time,” Danapani told eWorld.

The GetAcross! Game is a case in point. It helps teach your child to fill up the gaps in the bridge with the right number of bricks and, learn maths along the way.

Besides, the site has links to articles published on autism in international journals and links to the latest research published worldwide.
