Sites to help you understand the gravity of global warming.

Paromita Pain

Climate change is in the news and how! It’s easy to understand what it implies if you are well over your teens and an avid reader. But how do you explain it to young people, especially those just over ten? Don’t think too hard — ask Tikki.

A friendly and environmentally-aware penguin, Tikki does his ice pals proud by taking young people on a trip to understand what climate change actually entails. Catch Tikki at http://tiki.oneworld.net/global_warming/

climate_home.html where he explains the issue to young people and how it might actually affect them. Being a penguin he also explains how global affects his kind.

That’s not all. The Internet has a variety of resources that you could use, even in the classroom, to explain issues of import.

The http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/ site is a storehouse of information, especially designed to help young people understand climate change better. The site, set up by the US environmental protection agency, presents information tailored to a young audience and is clear in its presentation. Concepts of Greenhouse Effect, Climate Change and Global Warming are well described.

Did you know there was something called the ‘Little Ice Age’ before the actual one came along and movie makers made films on? Well if you didn’t, then you must check out the page at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/history.html.

The site is also good reading for grown-ups who can’t go through the dry realms of information generally available on the issue. Besides, you are sure to love the way various everyday examples are used to explain how small things can add up. Check out the page at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/bigdeal.html.

Browsing all these sites is fun. Also, only after you are done will you realise how much more you now know about this complex environmental change that is looming as the biggest threat of the century.
