Net connection

BHAGYA PRAKASH K

Get connected.

In our office, we have a DHCP Server with one NIC card and have Internet connection to only one other PC. How can we give Net access to all in the office?

Ron

Having DHCP with one NIC card is not a problem. You can use what is called a proxy server. A proxy server acts as mediator between the client (the computer of a user) and server (Internet Web server). When clients request data from an Internet resource, the traffic goes from your Web browser to the proxy server before it reaches the requested sources and back to the proxy. Then the proxy server transmits the data to you. To give access to Internet to all the computers in your organisation, please first download a free proxy server — proxyi (size 240 KB) from http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm. Install it in the computer that already has the Internet connection.

To install it, please do the following:

Double-click proxyi.exe, Click I Accept and Click Continue ( C:\Program Files\AnalogX\Proxy\), Click Yes, Click No, Close the proxy-Notepad

Click Ok (Installation Complete - Proxy has been successfully installed)

Select Start>Programs>Analogx>Proxy>Proxy , Click ok .

The proxy server has been installed, now we will have to configure it.

Near the clock, a green icon is visible.

On the green icon, right-click select Configure

Here, click on FTP, NNTP, SMTP, POP3, it will go to off state.

Now we can see http & Socks in ’on state’ and the rest will be in ’off state.’

Type the machine’s IP address in Proxy Binding box.

Click ok, Copy proxy.exe file from C:\Program Files\AnalogX\Proxy\

Click start > Programs > double click Startup

Now paste the proxy.exe file in this window (startup).

On all the other computers, first check if they are able to reach the computer in which this proxy server is installed. You can do this through a command called PING.

Suppose the proxy server address is, say, 10.10.10.10

From the other computers’ command prompt, type ping 10.10.10.10. If the proxy server is reachable, it will display a reply from 10.10.10.10.

If it is not reachable, it will say the request has been timed out. In that case, you will have to check for the physical connectivity to the proxy server. Now, on the client computers, please open Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet option >, in that click fifth tab Connections> click LAN settings under Proxy server, select the Check box (use a proxy server for your LAN). Type the proxy server address and port no 6588. Click Ok and click ok for Internet option box. Now you will be able to browse from all the computers where this setting is done.

On other browsers, the procedure for setting proxy address may vary slightly.

Note: The server in which the proxy server is installed must have a static IP address. All the other clients can be in DHCP.

There are several sites that offer free proxy servers. You can also have proxy servers with authentication. Apart from free proxy servers, there are priced products too, with rich features such as Web caching. This will cache the contents in the proxy server and serve clients, this way the speed increases and bandwidth can also be saved.
