Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Downloading video Is it possible to download YouTube videos to a hard disk? If so, how do I go about it? Ron One cannot, normally, download the video from these sites. You are allowed to view the video contents but not download or save it to your local hard disk. These sites give users only give the option to share the content with friends through e-mail. When you send these contents through e-mail, only the link is sent, not the full contents. The video content in these sites is mostly made of adobe flash player. Usually, when you open a streaming video file from the site, it starts buffering the video content from the site to your local hard disk and from that buffer only will it start playing. The location for the content from the site will be buffered to C:\Documents and Settings\”User” (the user logged into the machine)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. First delete all the content in this directory and start the streaming video. Once it has buffered completely, please check whether you have any video files in temporary Internet files directory. The video file may be with extension .avi, wmv, flv. If you have any video file with the name with which you viewed online, just copy that file from that directory to another directory. And check whether you are able to view the file. The other option for downloading or recording the online streaming video content from the site to your local hard disk is using third party applications and tools. These are available in the site for download, either as freeware or shareware. WM Recorder and Replay Media Catcher are shareware applications. These are friendly to use and you can download them from www.freedownloadmanager.org, http://all-streaming-media.com. When you use Replay media catcher, first open the application, it will ask to start recording, click yes, then open the site and start the streaming video. Once the video has started, the Web link will be added in the replay media catcher and it starts recording. Once the recording has started, you don’t have to open that site. The recorded file will be stored in “C:\Documents and Settings\“user”\My Documents\My Recordings\”. You can change the destination folder. By using Real player, you can save this type of online streaming files from the site. Download the real player version 11 from the site. It’s a beta version available for free from http://www.realplayer.com.au/. Just download the Basic player from the site and install it. Once this is installed, you can download the video you are viewing in the Web browser to your real player media library. For downloading the video content, please open the YouTube site and select the video to play. By right-clicking, you can get the option “download this video to real player”. Once you select this option, it will download the video content to your local hard disk and it will be added to your real player media library. The downloaded file will be stored in “C:\Documents and Settings\”user” (the user logged into the machine)\My Documents\My Videos\RealPlayer Downloads\”. You can change this path in the real player. Open the Real player - select Tools, in that select preference. In the preference tab is an option called “Download & Recording.” Please select this option, here you can specify the location to save the file. There is another option, “Enable Web downloading and Recording.” You will need to select this option to download and record the streaming content from the site. Solution by V.
