Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Running 2 anti-virus products simultaneously
Recently, I installed both McAfee and Norton antivirus protection in my Compaq PC. With this, the system has become very slow. Please suggest a solution. RAVI KUMAR LEDALLA Most current anti-virus products will detect the previously installed anti-virus software on your system and prompt you to uninstall the previous one and then install the second product. Some anti-virus products will abort installation if they detect another anti-virus application already installed. Please do not attempt to run two anti-virus products simultaneously. This will make your machine slow down dramatically and become unstable, and sometimes it may crash. For example, assume a new file is copied to your system. Now both the real-time scanners start to scan the same file, interrupting each other's functioning. If you would like to install new anti-virus software, it is recommended to uninstall the previously installed software, perform a complete system restart, and then install the new product. Some important guidelines regarding anti-virus products are: Keep your anti-virus product's virus definitions up-to-date. If you are using Internet Email client on your machine, please make sure you have enabled and configured e-mail virus protection on your anti-virus product. Anti-virus products will be effective only if the latest service packs and windows updates (critical updates) required to be installed are in place. So make sure "Automatic updates" on windows security centre are turned `On.' If possible, buy the Internet Security Suite, which contains anti-virus product, anti-spyware, personal firewall, etc, say Norton Internet Security 2008. Please note that it is not recommended enabling two firewall products installed on the same computer. You may also try out Free Online Anti- Virus Scanners available on the Web. Some of them are Kaspersky Online Scanner - http:// www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner BitDefender Online Scanner - http:// www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Trend Micro HouseCall - http:// housecall.trendmicro.com/ Symantec Secuirty Check - http:// security.symantec.com If you would still like two anti-virus products, then install both, but keep only one software's real-time protection turned `On' and use the other product for manual scan with real-time protection in `Off' condition, for example, use Norton anti-virus with auto-protect enabled and use McAfee for manual scanning.
