Enabling Task Manager

Whenever I press alt+ctrl+del, the system says task manager is disabled by administrator. Why is this happening? Please suggest a solution.

Srikanth

The Task Manager in Windows allows users to start and stop programs, monitor the performance of their computers, view and monitor all programs running on their computers, including system services, find the executable names of programs and change the priority of the process in which the programs run.

In windows XP, if the Welcome Screen is enabled for Logging in, then the keyboard combination Ctrl+Alt+Del key will open the Task Manager.

The windows task manager will be enabled in all windows installation by default. The system administrators can disable this for administrative reasons.

This is done through the registry setting or the group policy.

If the task manager has been disabled without the knowledge of the system administrator or the user, then there is a chance that some virus has disabled the task manager.

In case of virus, please check the computer and make sure the virus has been removed.

To make the change in the registry, please click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe. The registry editor will open. The location of the Enable/Disable Task manager is

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Name: DisableTaskMgr

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 1=Enable this key, that is Disable TaskManager

Value: 0=Disable this key, that is Don’t Disable, Enable TaskManager

By changing the value to 0, the task manager is enabled. Or the value DisableTaskMgr can be deleted also.

The following command can also be run from Start, Run (type the command as it is)

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

You can also download the fix from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/EnableTM.reg and run by double-clicking it.

The other method to enable the task manager is in the group policy.

Click Start. Click Run. Type gpedit.msc and Click Ok. The group policy editor window will open. In that, Select User Configuration, select Administrative Templates, select System, select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options and select Remove Task Manager.

Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.

Disable the Remove Task Manager policy to enable the Task Manager.
