Gmail mails in thunderbird

Is it possible to download my gmail mails into Thunderbird client? If so, please tell me how I go about it.

Bhaktavatsalam Gmail supports webmail, POP, and IMAP accounts. Gmail-supported POP mail clients are Apple Mail 3.0, Outlook Express, Outlook 2002/2003/2007, Thunderbird 2.0, Windows Mail, etc.

So you can download (pop) e-mails from Gmail webmail account into Thunderbird client.

To do this, you will need to follow two steps. The first one is to login to your gmail web account by using any web browser such as Internet Explorer and enable POP access. The second one is to configure Gmail account in Thunderbird email client.

You can download and install the latest version of thunderbird2 [size 6.4 MB] email client from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

To enable POP access, please follow these steps: Login to your Gmail web account by using any web browser such as IE, Firefox etc. and click the “Settings” link at the top right corner. This will display the Settings for your account.

Click the link “Forwarding and POP/IMAP “ and there you will see the settings for Forwarding, POP Download and IMAP Access. Inside the “POP Download” segment, the first option is “Status.” Here, you can select either the “Enable POP for all mail” or “Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on” option.

The second one is “When messages are accessed with POP,” Gmail offers three choices. They are “Keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox”, “archive Gmail’s copy” and “trash Gmail’s copy”.

Select any one of these choices depending on your requirement. After making the changes, click on the “Save changes” button. This will end your browser part of enabling POP access.

The next step is configuring Gmail account into Thunderbird email client. Open Thunderbird - Click Tools – Account Settings – Add Account button. This will bring up the New Account Setup Wizard. Now select “Gmail” and click Next.

In the “Your Name” field, enter your name or whatever you would like people to see in the ‘From’ field and type your Gmail username (everything before @gmail.com) into the “Email Address” field. Click Next and verify the information that you provide, then click Finish. This completes your gmail account configuration.

Select “Server Settings” listed under your new account and make sure the following settings are selected. Server Name is pop.gmail.com and port is 995. Under Security Settings, please make sure SSL is selected, then uncheck the box next to “Leave messages on server”.

Next, click the Outgoing Sever (SMTP) and make sure your Gmail Server Name is smtp.gmail.com, port is 587 and Secure Connection shows TLS.
