Hardware Columns - Come Again! No getting away Lost your precious HP notebook — and vital data too? Don’t lose heart! With HP’s PC tracing and data security services, you can not only track your lost laptop but also remotely destroy all data stored in it. This service, rolled out recently, will initially be available to enterprise and small and medium business customers. Gradually it will be made available to consumers. HP says India is the first country where it is offering this service. Nitin Chaudhry, Director-Commercial Products, Personal Systems Group, HP India, says customers can either go for pure tracing service, or for tracing and data destruction services. As part of the tracing service, the IP address to which the stolen notebook gets logged on to will be made available. If a customer signs up for the data destruction service, then an agent (a 3 megabyte file) will be loaded on the hard disk through the Web site at the time of registration, says Chaudhry. No software would be installed. If the notebook gets stolen, the installed agent will destroy all data, he explains. According to Chaudhry, for a one-year subscription, the PC tracing service will cost Rs 450, and for three years, Rs 1,000. The PC tracing and data destruction service will cost Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 for one year and three years, respectively, he says.
