Health Columns - Come Again! Lies, half-truths, and secrets
Don't we all lie a little to ourselves when it comes to our body weight? The trim ones, or those who think they are, like to think they are maintaining their weight; and we plump ones - don't call us fat! - like to think we've lost some. Well, here's Alice Wang (http://alicewang. com ; click on "Asimov's 1st law) who's designed a scale that will allow you to lie with an easier conscience. The "White Lies" scale is heaven sent to those who are trying to lose weight. The farther back you stand on the scale, the less you weigh. The scale shows you closer to your true weight as you step-up. Usually, we take a partner in crime - a boy- or a girl-friend, or uncomplaining spouse - in this little charade of trying to cheat ourselves about our weight. There are so many variations of the joke that begins "So my girl asked me if she looked fat, and I gave her an honest answer..." that it should pall. But admit it: doesn't it happen every time you are ready to go out for a party? So, here's the next one, the "Halftruth" scale. This scale has a display on the side so that you can't read your own weight; your better half has to do it for you. We are back full-circle in trying to choose between giving the correct answer and the right answer. And finally, the "open secrets" scale: this one sends a message with the weight to a designated phone. The burden is then on the receiver to reveal it to you. This way, your friend/spouse can catch you off-guard even while you are at work or play or simply sleeping. Back to square one, after a little delay perhaps? N.
