Internet Columns - Come Again! Of minds and mechanical men
Virtual fit first. - NAGARA GOPAL These days, I just don't want to go out of home on Sundays. Reason? Simple: it's the only free day and I'd rather watch a classic movie or read a good book or even dive into some comics than go out shopping. And I'd rather get an earful from my better half than find parking at a good mall. Well, here's some good news for people just like me: a "telerobotic shopper" developed by Japanese company TMSUK [http:// www.tmsuk.co.jp/english/index.html]. For details in English, please visit the pink tentacle blog [http://www.pinktentacle.com/2008/ 07/remote-control-shopping-robot/]. In short, an unwell grandmother used a cell-phone to control a robot to "go shopping" for a hat with her grand-daughter. She used the robot's vision (passed to her cell-phone) to navigate to the hat section, "see" what was on the shelves and choose hats that her granddaughter then modelled for her. Well, one positive that could come out of this is that you don't need to go looking for good parking slots in the malls. Another could be that you could send the robot to your avoidable second cousin to bring back your favourite book. But just imagine the plight of the staff at the malls: mechanical men fighting over the last shiny purple shirt on sale! N. NAGARAJMore Stories on : Internet | Come Again!
