Lazy again, or lazy still?

S.R. Raghunathan

Building smart ideas.

Till about a year ago, my son would bring his large lego blocks and ask me to build something, usually a train, sometimes a car or an aeroplane. He’d be pretty happy with the results, as I used to spend a long time building whatever he asked me, all the while talking to him about the colours, the shapes, the size, and who would get on to it and go.

Now that he is old enough to build his own stuff, I simply sit there watching him build the trains, sometimes dreaming that he will learn architecture, perhaps naval. And this pleasant day-dreaming is usually interrupted by a strident demand from my loving wife for some help with the weekend household chores.

Usually, it starts as a demand and very quickly moves into the realms of a short but not very sweet lecture on multi-tasking and time management. I know it by heart now, but it usually turns into an argument the moment she starts on all the time I spend with my PDA and my mobile calendar and my laptop calendar, but not having anything to show for it.

Well, here’s Michael Hunger (http://jexp.de/blog/archives/16-On-LEGO-Powered-Time-Tracking;-My-Daily-Column.html) describing how he constructed a real world organiser with his lego blocks, the only problem being that his co-workers started playing with the blocks and disturbing his “charts”.

Now here’s an idea: I will show this piece to my wife and continue to play with my son’s lego blocks!
