Hardware Columns - Come Again! Different strokes
Who better, to take commands. - K. MURALI KUMAR You could say it started when we received an Apple iPhone for review some weeks ago. The sheer concentrated exposure to different input methods in the last few weeks has set me thinking on input preferences. I liked the iPhone's virtual keyboard but did not like the one sported by a smartphone by another manufacturer. But I also find that I have become so used to an iPaq virtual keyboard that I made fewer mistakes with it while commuting, compared to the iPhone. I normally like clicky keypads with a hard feedback, like the Nokia N70's, but I find the soft rubbery keys of the Nokia e61i very comfortable when typing out a message. I also found that I attain really high speeds with two-thumbs on the qwerty keyboard than on the normal phone keypad. When it comes to desktops, I like soft keyboards; on the contrary, I like clickety-clack keys on my laptop. This perhaps goes to show one thing: that you like the feedback of the noise when you are not confident of the keys you have pressed. Sometimes, the need is practical: I am equally at home with a touchpad, an external mouse or a track-point in the laptop, but I like to go with an external trackball when I need some precision, like creating or editing an image. I am just starting off with voice commands on a new phone, but it's a pity that it's just a phone and not a dog! N. NAGARAJ More Stories on : Hardware | Come Again!
