Internet Your bit for your teacher
PAROMITA PAIN Isn’t it true that teachers who lay the foundation for what you achieve in the future rarely get any prizes for their efforts? It’s never too late to make up. If you have school-going children then here’s a way for them to show their teacher they care. Help them log onto the http://www.guruvarawards.com/ site and nominate their favourite teacher for the Guruvar awards. The Guruvar awards cover the length and breadth of India to reward educators. Dr Shashi Tharoor (former UN Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information), Dr R.K. Pachauri (Director General TERI India & Nobel laureate), Mr Ashok Ganguly, Chairman, CBSE, Prof V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU, amongst others, are advisory board and jury members. Entry to the awards is open to all teachers and Principals from a recognised Higher Secondary school with a CBSE, ICSE or State Government Board curriculum. The best thing is that young children nominate and play an important role in the winner selection process. Teacher mineAs the home pages makes clear, “Targeting over 3,000 schools, 1,44,000 teachers and 57 lakh students, Guruvar Awards will recognise and reward teachers who ‘go that extra mile’ and make a difference to individual children and schools they work in and the communities they are part of.” The site loads easily and is easy to navigate. All it takes is a few clicks to nominate the No. 1 Principal, No.1 Teacher, Outstanding New Teacher and No. 1 teacher from a State board or regional board. A simple registration form sets voters on their way. The nomination form requires a description of what makes the nominated teacher outstanding. Besides, children can have fun with friends too, thanks to Guruvar site’s links to social networking sites such as Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=36926841855) and Orkut ( http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=50907412). The http://gemseducation.blogspot.com/ allows regular updates and the posting of the voter’s views. As Priyanka has written in bold letters on the Facebook wall, “Guys it’s time to pay back!” More Stories on : Internet | Education
