Telecommunications Mobile matters
Try it out. Paromita Pain E-mail on your mobile phone isn’t anything very new, for sure. But the recently launched MobileRediff application seeks to make e-mail, news and updates more seamlessly accessible on your mobile. Let’s check the scene out. Uday Sodhi, Senior Vice-President – Interactive Services Rediff.com, explains: “Users will have to download MobileRediff client application on their mobile by sending an SMS <MRC> to 57333. Subscribers will be provided with a download link either through SMS or service inbox depending on the phone model. Users have to click on that link and Rediff’s server will automatically check if the handset is compatible with MobileRediff application and then start the download process.” MobileRediff allows mobile phone users to check the latest news updates, access Rediff.com services and Rediffmail. The service allows users to preview e-mail attachments, share files as attachments from mobile phones and also enables users to back up their mobile phone contacts onto the Rediffmail address book. Users can send and receive Hindi e-mail and SMS messages and download SMS-based content services such as ring tones, wallpapers, caller back tones and jokes. Lightweight: The MobileRediff is a light-weight application of around 200kB, which requires less memory and does not slow down the handset. How secure? The MobileRediff connects only to Rediff mails and other Rediff servers through GPRS. Rediffmail has a standard virus check of the attachments. Since MobileRediff client talks to the Rediffmail system, similar regulations get extended towards MobileRediff as well, says Sodhi. As operators launch 3G services in India, users will be able to enjoy more rich applications such as watching video, do live streaming of videos, video chat, download music files — basically they will be able to do all that they do on the Internet using their PC.
