Internet Columns - Come Again! As close as can be
Cut off from the local action? I thought I was doing a smart thing by checking my e-mail on my commute — about 45 minutes — from my mobile phone, just to get a heads-up on what to expect for the day. I’d also check up on our mobile Web site (pda.businessline.in) to check the latest updates; our twitter feed ( www.twitter.com/businessline); and our audio feeds ( www.businessline.in/audio). On the way back, I’d catch up on my favourite blogs and news sources, and the opening of the US markets. Well, I found out that it was not a smart thing to do, by fortunately leaving my pda phone at home the other day. I actually had to pass the time on my commute by opening my eyes wide and looking around me. I’d missed the cutting down of a favourite tree where the gang used to gather on the way to school; a landmark building gone; a favourite fast food joint was missing; a couple of old ladies selling flowers and fruits in a particular intersection were not there any more. By getting more and more connected to the rest of the world virtually, I was missing on the very real local connections. The Internet was supposed to encourage “local” stuff, but does it, really, here, in India? And given the Internet penetration levels here, does it even matter? Are we trading away our awareness of things closer to us for a seeming connectedness to the rest of the world? Did you just log in to your social network account to share and comment on this article even as your loved one is calling you for dinner? Some people never learn: my wife is talking to me as I am typing this on my mobile phone on the commute. I haven’t heard a word she said. N. Nagaraj More Stories on : Internet | Come Again!
