Happy birthday!

Network greeting...

Some years ago, I was very depressed the evening of my birthday because no one other than my parents remembered it, in spite of some not-so-subtle hints. Okay, it was unfortunate that the people I hinted to went out of town and the rest wouldn't give me the time of the day.

I am talking about a time when people had little notebooks - the paper kind - in which they wrote these things down; and the tech-savvy had electronic diaries. Of course, you always had the cases where they didn't bother to write your birthday down because they were sure they'd remember it; or they'd write it down or type it into their diaries and forget to look into them on your birthday.

In the past few years, every one got on to the engagement and delight bandwagon and there's no risk that your birthday will go unnoticed, at least by people who want you to spend some money on them. You get unsolicited greeting cards from hotels and restaurants, stockbrokers, opticians and even dentists. It's a different thing that the person who sent you the card knows nothing about you, but it's fodder for the blinds in your office (to hint to those working around you).

Now, you start getting birthday wishes even before you wake up from friends in Australia and it goes on till the next day when you receive wishes from Hawaii. And all because you are part of a social network. Oh, and before you get too excited, it's not that these people are more caring, just that the network collects your birthday from your profile and alerts them. And its noblesse oblige, you know, that once you have been alerted, you should acknowledge it.

And here we are, so happy to receive wishes from people who didn't bother remember our birthdays, who didn't bother to write it down, or type it in; who simply used our own input to show their love and affection for us. Huh, people!
