Paromita Pain

Reading is fun and the best of unlimited access to the Internet is that you read as much as you want. Today your favourite classics might be out of print but if you can log onto Project Gutenberg ( http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/), you will find more than just your favourites.

Now everyone knows Gutenberg’s printing press revolutionised the realm of books forever so it should be no surprise that project Gutenberg, first producer of free electronic books, is now transforming the way we read online. Among the oldest players in the ebook zone, the site is an easy to navigate page without fancy embellishments. This essentially means that you can log on and read without any hassles of pop-ups or image-heavy advertisements that might cause your computer to hang.

Searching through is easy. You can search using author names or book titles. There are over 28,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg Online Book Catalogue. The advanced search option is a delight.

The audio book section is for those who would rather listen. But people with slow connections, beware.

Gutenberg is everyone’s efforts, so volunteers are always welcome. Log onto http://www.pgdp.net/c/ to see how you help and there is plenty for everyone to do. Essentially the method here is Web-based. Each book is divided into individual pages and assigned to different volunteers. Proof readers are welcome.

They are sent scanned copies of pages to be read and corrections suggested. Each book goes through two rounds of formatting before being put online.

You could contribute money-wise too. They don’t ask for much.
