Measure the saving.
Go Green' is the emerging watchword for companies, both IT and non-IT, across the globe. And businesses are setting aside a part of their budget towards initiatives to conserve resources, be it fuel or manpower.
eWorld sounded out a few players for what they are doing on this front. Here's a sampling:
There is a 40 per cent saving in power alone. Improving the energy efficiency of IT systems is an excellent place to start cost cutting because it could help consolidate infrastructure, while at the same time reducing operational expenditure, believes Sridhar Sarathy, Vice-President, India Operations, Juniper Networks India.
Energy efficiency is no longer just a feel-good thing to do, it's becoming a corporate mandate in many of the world's biggest networks, he says.
How about a model landscape to capture the concept?
Virtusa India Pvt Ltd says it is setting up a new campus in Hyderabad to support an eco-friendly atmosphere.
Priority is being given to the efficient use of water, soil and landscapes in addition to the use of energy efficient and eco-friendly equipment and the use of recycled material, says Krishna Murty Yamajala, Vice-President and India Centre Head, of the company.
Do it with blogs
Blogs can be many things to many people, they can also be an effective platform to spread the good word around.
Premkumar Pandurangam, Head of `Go Green' Initiative, Cognizant, Go Green Blog, says the company uses blogs as a platform for innovation, knowledge management, competitive insights and employee communication and collaboration.
"Our internal blogging system, known as ChannelOne, is the first port of call for collaboration and insights.
As part of our green initiative we handed over 18,000 notebooks to students of Government schools.
The notebooks were made of sugarcane waste (bagasse), ensuring that not a single tree was felled while providing notebook supplies for an entire year for these schools," says Pandurangam.
Green Intelligence solutions have a positive impact on the environment, profits as well as on employee productivity and process efficiency.
"We have seen average payback time of around six months for our collaboration solutions. Other things such as automatic remote error correction could ensure seamless functionality without human intervention" asserts Ritesh Jayswal, Chief Sales, Enablement Officer, Avaya GlobalConnect.
The difference is in the consumer mindset and awareness about Green IT. In developed countries this awareness already exists, thereby facilitating a demand in the market for such products.
In India, the awareness is slowly catching up.
The demand for green products is mainly driven by the cost-effectiveness of such products due to low power consumption, says Stanley Wu, Country Head, Notebooks and Eee PC, Asus India. To maintain a high quality and meet the requirements of clients, ASUS has established a green manufacturing management system, he says.
