The magic in a piece of cloth folded eight times over….

Mallika Sarabhai

Is art for art's sake or for advocacy? Mallika Sarabhai knows the magic of marrying the two without making it tedious.

“Art can go through when other things cannot. We need a language that reaches the masses,” says Mallika Sarabhai, dancer, actor and activist. But if one wants to use art to advocate a cause, the art has to be excellent, she says.

“Because when you are advocating a cause it tends to get boring and exhausting. You will have to make it interesting, it has to be contextualised, and it has to be entertaining,” she adds.

And her performance at TEDIndia was no exception to what she preaches. The short dance drama that highlighted the indifference to women who have been violated was powerful, gripping and left the audience in awe.

Another short audio-visual presentation on how a piece of cotton cloth folded eight times over can make drinking water safe exhibited how art that has been contextualised to specific socio-economic conditions can be an effective means of communication. — SP
