Reach for the sky

Shukla Bose

The sky is beyond us, we say. But there are others who prove us wrong.

And Shukla Bose, founder and head of the Parikrama Humanity Foundation, a non-profit organisation that runs extraordinary schools for poor children, is definitely one of them.

The aim is to break the cycle of poverty and to achieve this, marginalised children are given top-class English education that will help them compete with students from the best schools in the country.

And no wonder a young boy at Parikrama gets the latest information about his favourite bike from the Internet, and another little girl keeps in touch with her friends on Facebook.

“Teachers are not just teachers, they are also parents,” says Shukla, who has launched several after-school programmes and has plans for setting up a central teacher training institute. — SP
