The drop in tamarind prices has, as a result, affected the seed prices too. Tamarind seeds are boiled, crushed and used as starch. Besides, they find use in the gum and paper industry. In fact, the seed is used to produce fine paper.
Tamarind seed prices have dropped to Rs 9 a kg from Rs 15 in October, according to Mr O.M.S. Raja.
Again, the prices have crashed mainly due to higher production.
In markets closer to the growing regions, tamarind seed quoted at Rs 1,800 a quintal in October.
The seed is also facing the fate of the fruit, with no takers on fears of a further fall in prices.
“Prices could drop to Rs 5-6 a kg,” said Mr Raja.
Other sources said prices could plunge even further.
