An estimated 2 million kg of virginia tobacco was gutted in a fire that broke out in the warehouse of Bommidala Purnaiah Holdings Private Limited's Tobacco Enterprises of India at Chowdavaram near here on Friday.

The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet. Seven fire tenders worked for 12 hours to put out the fire. According to K. Ramesh Babu, Director of the Bommidala group, the tobacco was kept in the warehouse for export.

The fire department personnel had a hard time in containing the fire and prevent it from spreading to three other warehouses in the vicinity.
