Corporate Environment Responsibility is as important as Corporate Social Responsibility, as the world faces grave climate change challenges, Mr J.M Mauskar, Special Secretary, Environment Ministry, said here on Tuesday.

Addressing an event on “Green Buildings', Mr Mauskar said all corporates, especially builders, need to have internal regulations in place to ensure compliance with environmental norms.

“Everything cannot and should not be left to Government regulations,” he told the conference, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and attended by builders, environmental and engineering experts.

He urged company boards to give priority to monitoring environmental responsibility. “There have been cases where many companies have completed projects even before getting environment clearances,” he said, adding that environment compliance needs to come before a project starts.

“It doesn't help anyone if a building is razed once it is ready,” said Mr Mauskar.

The conference also stressed the need for retro-fittings to save energy as also rainwater harvesting and use of solar energy to ensure optimum utilisation of scarce natural resources.

The meet also called upon engineers and architects to think of ways to design buildings that took care of the tropical needs of a region.
