As many as a million bank employees and officers are to strike work on February 20 and 21.
The strike call has been given by the United Forum of Bank Unions, a representative body of the nine bank unions of the country.
The employees are demanding that the Government should desist from banking reforms and outsourcing of banking related work.
The demands include early wage revision besides settling of pending issues like compassionate appointment scheme, according to C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees Association.

Comments:
If they fail to work, hundreds of consumers shall file service deficiency cases against the employees in consumer courts.
How long these Bank Unions will stick to this dull routine of strikes
once in every two months? As it is bank employees at the retail counters
are being rendered irrelevant with Internet and ATM. That the Bank
employees Unions should think that earth will shake if they go on strike
is self delusional. When bank managements are advertising that they
are launching innovative measures cannot the bank employees also think
out of the box solutions for pressing their demand.
Bank unions in India are well organized but then they are not agitating for common goals like wage revision in comparison with central government employees. These very unions had betrayed many employees earlier and they resort to politically motivated strikes at the national level. The interest of the public should be taken care of first rather than showing muscle power at all times.
when will the bank employees work for their bread/
when the entire worlds banking system was collapsing, it was our own indian
banking system which withstood, it is because of these employees and the decisions
they've taken especially when our judicial system and execution system is not near
perfect.
Today, our banking system is under attack, we, the public is not well informed with
clarity, what is the exact list for which they're agitating for, it's important that the
media provides the information and a wider public debate takes place.
This is very critical as today more than 200 companies have restructred or are going
thru restructuring, due to policy parlysis and no decision making happening at the
government level.
If we indians do not wake up and deal with this, we'll be heading very difficult times,
as it is millions of people in india have already lost jobs and its not being reported,
The only thing we could do is bring awareness, wider debate, and bring our
government to take decisions.
I am against bank strikes. But I sincerely hope that the Govt. decides
on timely WAGE REVISION for Bankers, which is already due w.e.f.
November 2012. Government must pay heed to the disciplined banking
community and give BANKERS hike in salary in line with 6th C.P.C.
Bankers also face RISKS associated with the nature of their job, which
is telling on their mental & physical health. The Govt. if it feels
justified may provide solace to those bankers who have sincerely
worked all their life but without a retrieve. I would be delighted if
the Govt. could see us all the working class with the same eye and
instill a sense of belongingness. TIMELY ACTION CAN YIELD HUGE
RESULTS.
