To stage protest march on Sept 5 in Capital

The State Convention of New Generation Banks and Insurance Employees Union has decided to stage a Parliament March on September 5 to press the Government for amending the Industrial Disputes Act to include workers of new generation banks.

The inclusion of new generation banks and insurance employees in the Industrial Disputes Act will help prevent the victimisation and retrenchment of workers in this sector.

A Secretariat March has also been planned to compel the Kerala Government to issue specific orders for the intervention of the Labour Department in trade disputes of these banks and insurance companies.

Earlier, inaugurating the State convention here, Mr Kanam Rajendran, State General Secretary, AITUC, called upon the Government to suitably amend the Industrial Disputes Act by extending its applicability to new generation banks and insurance companies for protecting jobs of employees in these organisations.

He pointed out that the workers in these organisations, who are designated as “Managers” are deprived of their right as workers and excluded from the coverage of various beneficial laws applicable to the workers of the industry.

The move to alienate these workers from enjoying their various trade union rights and job security benefits should be stopped, he said adding that the recent agitation against retrenchment of workers in a private life insurance company in Kochi was commendable.

Mr Rajendran said the Government should also make effective laws to safeguard the interest of the investors who have put their money with private insurance companies.

There have been many instances of companies closing their branches after collecting huge amount of money. The workers' contracts are also terminated.

Such a situation creates animosity among investors towards the workers, he added.

Mr John Lukose, Chairman of the Union, said that the State Convention also discussed the challenges and threats faced by the employees in new generation banks and insurance companies.

Mr Rajendran and Mr C.S. Vinod have been elected as President and General Secretary of the Union respectively.
