Wireless networking company Ruckus WirelessT is opening a new R&D centre in Bangalore to develop new technologies to serve the mobile Internet infrastructure market worldwide.

The 23,000 square foot facility will house over 100 employees. Currently, Ruckus employs 50 people in its Bangalore development centre and plans to expand this workforce by more than 50 per cent by this year-end, according to a press statement.

Due to the explosive growth of mobile data traffic, Wi-Fi has become a strategic tool for operators to add needed capacity and ease congestion by offloading cellular data traffic to a smart Wi-Fi network that can be integrated with operators existing 3G/4G infrastructures, the statement said.

“Integrating Wi-Fi into cellular networks has become the most popular and cost-effective way to relieve capacity pressures due to a deluge of data traffic,” Ms Selina Lo, President and CEO, said in a press statement.

According to Gartner, Ruckus was the fastest growing player among the world's top five Wi-Fi suppliers worldwide, with a 65.7 per cent from the third quarter of 2010 to 2011.

Ruckus is currently conducting trials of its advanced Wi-Fi systems with a number of telecom operators in India.

The new Bangalore operations will be its first development centre in India, apart from its four other R&D centres in Taiwan (Taipei), China (Shenzhen), Israel (TelAviv), and California (Sunnyvale).
