Nearly 300 workers of Karaikal Port staged a dharna and a ‘begging’ agitation outside the port premises on Monday in protest against the management reportedly not giving them Diwali bonus this year.

The workers came out of the port premises, locked the gates and staged a dharna and resorted to a begging agitation to raise funds for buying goods for Diwali. Speakers alleged that the management was not offering them any perks normally given to permanent workers in other organisations.

On Saturday, contractors who had taken up works at the port had laid a siege to the port premises in protest against non-payment of Rs 10 crore in arrears and claimed that over 2000 workers under them were suffering due to delayed payment They also locked port gates and refused entry for vehicles.

This is the second major agitation being faced by the administration. Port authorities were however not available for comment on the agitation.
