Chennai Sports Organisers will be the franchisee owner of ‘Chennai Cheetahs,' the team representing Chennai in the forthcoming World Series Hockey.
Mr L.T. Nanwani, Director, Chennai Sports Organisers, said that Chennai has always had a strong sports culture and the company is committed to strengthen the talent pool of hockey players. Research has revealed that speed is a key attribute of the sport and hence the team has been named as Chennai Cheetahs.
Mr Nanwani is also the promoter of Jubilee Granites, a leading mining company in South India that owns ‘Black and Black Galaxy' granite varieties. In the lines of the Indian Premier League in cricket, the World Series Hockey, which is a joint initiative between the Indian Hockey Federation and Nimbus Sport, will be held from December 17 to January 22. It will involve around 200 leading players — Indian and international — showcasing their talent in 61 matches.
It will be a multi-city franchisee-based league with players being allocated to the teams based on the internationally accepted and practised draft system. The inaugural edition of the league will comprise eight teams out of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Pune, Bhopal, Punjab, Ranchi and Rourkela.
