BSNL Kerala will roll out 4G services in all the district headquarters major cities and towns of the state by December this year.

“The equipment will be installed bby September and customers will get to experience 4G by December’, R Mani, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Kerala Circle, said here.

Schedule delayed

BSNL had originally planned to roll out 4G services in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode by March 2017. But tender formalities delayed the schedule.

It has now decided to make available 4G to all district headquarters, major cities and towns. At least 2,200 4G sites will be installed during the next one year in the state.

Alongside, BSNL will also upgade 3G services, a final decision on which is pending with the Centre. Mani said that 1,100 new 3G and 300 new 2G sites are also being planned.

Wifi hotspots

At least 71 per cent of the circle is now covered under 3G against 34 per cent a year ago. This is expected to go up more than 90 per cent by 2017 end.

Lakshadweep Islands, also part of the Kerala circle, and Idukki district will have better coverage in the next couple of months.

In Lakshadweep, 10 new 2G and 12 3G sites are being planned with the trebling of the satellite bandwidth.

In addition to 200 access points in the circle, Mani said that Wifi hotspots with BSNL 4GPlus and mobile data offload are being planned at 311 locations across the state.

Landline upgrade

Thrust is also being given on landline with the upgrade of the existing exchanges to the Next Generation Network (NGN) platform.

It provides a host of value added services and facilities like fixed mobile convergence and fixed mobile telephony.

At present, 136 exchanges have migrated to NGN. Another 806 are proposed for migration; 478 CDOT exchanges too are to be upgraded.

Electronic Clearing Scheme has been replaced by National Automated Clearing House.
