India’s first Datacentre Campus is going to come up in Hyderabad soon. With the Centre poised to make it mandatory for firms to keep the data within the country for security reasons, the Telangana government has begun talks with global datacentres to locate their facilities in Hyderabad.

“We are looking for an anchor unit to drive the momentum. We have identified the land required for the campus,” Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao has said.

The Minister, who has just returned from a two-week trip to the US, held discussions with ecosystem partners there to discuss the idea.

“The Union Government is going to make it mandatory for the corporates to keep their data within the country. Our campus will be handy for players in the datacentre industry to offer solutions for Indian firms,” the Minister said.

Exclusive policy soon

The State is going to bring in an exclusive Datacentre Policy in the next two months to offer incentives and ensure quick permissions for the projects.

The IT and IT-enabled services industry in the State has registered exports worth ₹75,070 crore in 2015-16, up 13.25 per cent. “The growth rate is higher than that of national average of 12.3 per cent for the year. We are targeting to double the IT exports during our tenure to about ₹1.20 lakh crore,” he said.

The State, which clocked IT exports of ₹66,276 crore in the previous year, employed 4.07 lakh people, which is 35,000 more than the previous year’s number.

“As we double exports, we would like to add six lakh jobs, taking the direct employment in the sector to 10 lakh,” he said.

The government is planning to set up three IT parks in the public-private partnership model to expand the industry beyond the existing clusters.
