Delhi has emerged the most preferred State for hiring in telecom and allied sectors, according to a recent India Hiring Intent survey.

As per the survey, hiring intent in this sector is expected to increase from 16 per cent to 20 per cent in 2017.

The India Hiring Intent survey is a part of India Skills Report 2017, which is a joint initiative by PeopleStrong, an HR solutions and HR Technology company; Wheebox, a Global Talent Assessment company; LinkedIn; the Confederation of Indian Industry; Association of Indian Universities; All India Council for Technical Education; and The United Nations Development Programme.

Key factors

“It is interesting to see the interest of telecom and allied industry employers in hiring from Delhi. It could be attributed to the availability of the engineering and general graduate talent pool in this area or to the fact that many telecom and allied industries are headquartered in Delhi NCR,” said Pankaj Bansal, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, PeopleStrong.

Telecom and allied sectors have been witnessing a lot of action in the recent times, resulting in a positive hiring intent, he said.

The survey further found that the preferred age group for hiring in telecom and allied sectors is 22-25 years.

However, gender diversity is low, with the percentage of males and females at 83.84 per cent and 16.16 per cent, respectively.

Gender diversity

Another interesting trend, per the survey, was that even though gender diversity is low, most of the companies do not have ‘women’ hiring targets.

Even in companies that have set targets, the number is as low as 10-15 per cent of total hiring, it said.

The report is a combination of the efforts made to assess the five-lakh-plus candidates from 29 States and seven Union Territories who appeared for WEST (Wheebox Employability Skill Test) and made it to corporates spread across the 11 industry sectors that participated in the survey.
