The Central government on Friday said that it has finalised the rural business process outsourcing (BPO) policy and approved 48,000 seats for setting up call centres across the country.
“I have finalised a policy for call centres in smaller towns, I have approved 48,000 seats. Expression of interest will be invited soon for the purpose,” Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said here.
He said the seats for call centres will be divided across the States on the basis of their population.
The government has already identified small towns such as such as Gorakhpur, Ghazipur and Sagar, and some of the places in the Northeast.
The policy that aims to provide incentives to companies for setting up BPOs in small towns also would spread in later stage.
Currently, the IT profile of India shows hubs in few limited cities such as Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Vijayawada, Bengaluru and Mysuru and this needs to be widened across the country, particularly in small mofussil towns, Prasad said.
Skill developmentMeanwhile, highlighting the importance of skill development in making a success of the National Digital Literacy Mission and Digital India Campaign, National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) laid foundation stone of its headquarters at Dwarka, here.

The government also launched a national toll-free helpline number 1800-11-65-11 for NIELIT students, Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) portal and Digital Marketing Information Booklet on the occasion.
NIELIT has trained over 20 lakh students in the last two decades across 31 NIELIT centres besides a network of about 900 accredited training partners and nearly 6000 facilitation centres.
Prasad said, “A digital revolution has begun in the country. NIELIT will be the centre of digital empowerment in India by minimising the digital divide through skill development and by providing basic digital literacy at a click of a button.”
