Social networking accounts for the bulk of time spent online, according to a study conducted by Opera.

Announcing the findings of the study, Opera CTO Bruce Lawson told newspersons here on Thursday that of all the web pages viewed by the Opera Mini mobile browser users, 55 per cent are social networking sites followed by news, which is the second most popular type of content viewed by all users.

Browsing products from smartphones is also gaining popularity. "About 9 per cent of the top 100 websites visited are e-commerce and classified websites,’’ he said.

Music sites are also among the most visited of the download portals. About 75 per cent of these are for downloading music.

Opera enables more than 350 million Internet consumers worldwide to connect with the content and services, including over 50 million in India.

The study is based on the aggregated information obtained from Opera Mini servers from June 2015 to May 2016.
