Telecom services provider Telenor has swapped 1,000 of 24,000 sites across its six circles in India to newer technology to date that will enable it to be ready for high speed data.

“We are modernising the network to be ready for high speed data. We will build capability and then ride on the platform,” Sharad Mehrotra, CEO, Telenor India said. The company is investing Rs 1240 crore for upgrading the technology and expects to complete the process at all its sites by January 2017, he added.

Though Telenor today offers only 2G services, it is discussing how to increase the footprint and will look at spectrum options as and when they are opportunities. “We will evaluate them and will look at all options including M&A and spectrum trading,” he said.

Telenor’s recent introduction of the Rs 39 package that offers download of You Tube during the night hours had become very popular, Mehrotra said, and the life insurance product had also gained traction with around 6.6 million customers opting for it. The company’s total subscriber base stands at around 48 million.
