Nandan Nilekani, former CEO of Infosys, has pledged a seed-grant of $200,000 to The/Nudge Foundation, a non-profit organisation that focuses on sustainable poverty alleviation at scale.

The Foundation has also received contributions of $50,000 from Great Wall Club, $75,000 from InMobi and $40,000 from Paytm.

Founded by former Chief Revenue Officer of InMobi Atul Satija in July, The/Nudge Foundation is an attempt to impart life-skills, literacy and livelihoods to the underprivileged in residential ‘Gurukuls’ over a period of four months.

“We are running a non-residential pilot of two-hour literacy classes in Belandur, Bengaluru where we are training the underprivileged in English, using a mix of Kannada and English. On November 1, we are starting two residential Gurukuls over four months for 50 men and 50 women, where the former will be trained in life skills, driving and get placed thereafter with one of the many corporates we have partnered with.

“Similarly, the women will be trained in soft skills, hygiene and given special training to become entry level beauticians,” Satija told BusinessLine , on the sidelines of the Global Mobile Internet Congress, Bengaluru.

While life skills for men will be imparted by ex-Army personnel, soft skills for women will be imparted by senior teachers and wardens of hostels. And candidates for the Gurukul poverty alleviation programme will be identified with the help of NGOs.
