What's OFC

S. Vaidya Nathan

AN optical fibre is made of pure glass which is the transmission medium over which light travels. OFCs are made from the fibre and used on long-haul, under-sea and metro networks. OFCs are of two types: Single- and multi-mode. Single-mode, in turn, is of two types: Conventional single-mode fibre and premium fibres. Conventional fibres account for 50 per cent but much of the hit for the industry has been due to premium fibres.

Depending on number of fibres in the cable, OFCs are known as 6/12 (used in metro networks) and 24/48 fibre (used in long haul networks).
