Asahi India: Buy

B. Krishna Kumar

TAKING into account the strong fundamentals, prominent position in the industry and the de-risking efforts undertaken recently, Asahi India is a good long-term portfolio candidate.

Asahi India is the market leader in the laminated safety glass products. It caters to the original equipment needs of almost all major automobile companies. Over the past few years, the company has taken efforts to broaden its product portfolio. The company has recently shifted its focus towards non-automotive segment and turned aggressive in the replacement market.

The company is also taking steps to move up the value chain in both the automotive and non-automotive business segments. Asahi's new production facility at Chennai is expected to be commissioned by November 2004. This would put the company in a position to cater effectively to Hyundai Motor. In light of these factors, Asahi India appears positioned to log higher growth.
