Telecom majors slash tariffs

BSNL has cut STD charges by one-third. It has also reduced local call tariffs for its mobile users by almost 60 per cent, maintaining its status as the least expensive cellular service in the country.

Reliance has also slashed pre-paid tariffs, and Bharti has followed suit. Customers having pre-paid connections of Reliance and Bharti will now have to pay up to 60 per cent less by way of tariffs. As per the new tariffs:

  • Local and intra-circle calls between Reliance phones will be charged at 99 paise per minute down from Rs 2.49 per minute.

  • Calls originating from Reliance pre-paid to other GSM and landline phones will be charged at a flat rate of Rs 1.79 per minute from the earlier Rs 2.49 to Rs 2.99 per minute.

  • As per Bharti's new tariffs, local call rates from Airtel pre-paid to Airtel mobile have been slashed to Re 1 per minute from Rs 2.49 a minute.

  • STD calls to other Airtel mobiles will now cost Rs 2 per minute, a reduction of more than 30 per cent from Rs 2.99 a minute.

This makes it less expensive to make STD calls from a mobile phone than from a fixed-line phone. The new tariffs also reduce the differential between post-paid and pre-paid connections.
